How To Cut Wire Shelving Using Your Dremel 4000

This is a problem that many people face when they have purchased some wire shelving at the local DIY store and they are sure that it will fit as a handy extra shelf in the fridge, only to find that when they came to fit it, it was too big!

No need to use a hacksaw if you own a Dremel 4000. See how easy it is to cut the wire shelving to perfectly fit into your fridge.

Tools Needed

• Dremel 4000
• Dremel 4000 Cut off wheel Attachment
• Dremel 4000 Drum Sander Attachment
• Tape Measure
• Pencil

Saftey Tip

Make sure that you use a two hand grip on the rotary tool when using a cut-off wheel attachment to stop it from vibrating and jumping. Because you are cutting through steel wire, the cut-off wheels will wear quite quickly.  If you have several shelves to cut, you may well need several cut-off wheels to complete the job, so be prepared.

Step 1

You can buy metal shelving kits at most hardware stores and they can easily be cut fit exactly fit your extra storage  requirement, be it a fridge or a closet.

 Step 2

Using the tape measure, measure the width of where you want the shelf to go, allowing for 1/2″ gap either side. Take the measurement and mark it onto the wire shelf at a few locations across the width so that you will be sure to get a nice straight cut.

Step 3

Before you start to cut, make sure that the wire shelf is secured to a stable work area using clamps to prevent it from jumping and causing harm. Slowly start the dremel 4000 and get it to a 35,000 rpm and then gently run the spinning cut off wheel across your pencil marks.

Step 4

When you have cut through all the wire sections, change the attachment on your Dremel to the Drum sander and then at a low speed of about 10,000 to 15,000 rpm,  gently smooth off  the rough edges until you are satisfied that they will not catch or tear anything.

Attach the brackets or fixings to your fridge or closet and your wire shelf is ready to install.
