For The Complete Product Range Visit: Dremel 4000

I have a friend who is in the market for a cordless rotary tool. Sounds simple right?…Just send them down to the local hardware store and buy one. Well, it’s not that simple, you see there are a number of different models to choose from and if you don’t know what you are doing you could end up buying something that really doesn’t do the job it was intended for. So I decided to take it upon myself to do the research for him to find the best rotary tool on the market today and eventually came up with the Dremel 4000 multi tool, which is one of the most popular models in the Dremel range.

What Is a Dremel 4000?

The Dremel 4000 series is the ultimate multipurpose tool that can be adapted for many uses in and around the home/workshop and should be a must in any handyman or handywoman’s s tool box. This remarkable high performance tool will work where a conventional power tool will not.

This Dremel 4000 multi tool is small, lightweight and is easily held in the hand plus with it’s powerful electric motor and huge variety of accessories. including drill bits, brushes, abrasive wheels, polishers, engraving cutters, router bits. the Dremel 4000 makes light work of many jobs that if completed by hand would take a great deal of hard work and also many hours to complete.

The trick to how the Dremel 4000 multi tool operates is in it’s high revolution speed. The best way to understand it’s high speed is by comparing it to a standard drill which operates at around 2800 RPM. The Dremel 4000 operates between 5,000 and up 35,000 RPM.

This high speed low torque dremel rotary tool means that the work is done with very little pressure but with very high speed.  You simply hold and guide it.

What I Liked about the Dremel 4000 Rotary Tool

Weight and Handling

The Dremel 4000 rotary tool kit weighs about 19 oz and is 9” long and comes with a 6 ft cord which means that it is ideal for most jobs but the weight may become an issue if you are using it primarily to work on delicate projects because after holding the tool for extensive periods of time, it may become too heavy. This can easily be overcome when you purchase the Dremel 6/50 model as you get a Flex Shaft attachment which is smaller pen-style hand-piece that attaches to the main Dremel which is light and allows you to work on small delicate jobs with ease.

If you decide to get another model you can also purchase this attachment separately Dremel 225-01 Flex Shaft Attachment

Electronic Feedback circuitry Motor

This is a new feature that has been introduced on the Dremel 4000 model and basically what this does is to ensure that the tool keeps spinning at that same constant speed (whatever you set it at) despite the amount of pressure you apply to it, allowing you to complete your projects easier, however for best results it is not advisable to assert too much pressure as you could easily damage your work, but instead do a number of light to medium pressure strokes letting the tool do its job.

Variable Speed Control

One of the best features I liked about the Dremel 4000 multi tool was the way in which you can easily set the speed control. On many other models I looked at the speed setting which is marked either 1,2,3,4 or A,B,C,D which does not really help in telling me how fast the tool is rotating. The Dremel 4000 speed setting is controlled via a dial at the back end of the housing and is sympathetically marked with numbers ranging between 5,000 and 35,000 RPM which makes a lot more sense.

Soft Start Up

A great safety feature that I loved was the soft start. By activating this, the Dremel 4000 tool will start gradually thus avoiding any sudden jolts. If it were to start at full speed that could make it jump and damage your project or even cause harm to the operator.

What’s Included in the Dremel 4000 6/50

You will get different attachments depending on the model but on the 6/50 model the following 6 Attachments are included.

Planer Attachment

Turns the Dremel 4000 multi tool into a plane so that you are able to carry out planing jobs on any flat wooden surface like picture frames, doors, flooring and more…

Flex Shaft Attachment

When holding the main Dremel multi tool for long periods of time it can become heavy which is not good for more detailed work, so you can use the flex shaft attachment which attaches on to the Dremel and turns it into a small sized pen-style hand-piece with the collet at the end where you are able to connect all the different bits to, for significantly finer work, plus more exact command over the instrument. This can be very important to model building, engraving of personalized objects and goods. It helps make utilizing the Dremel similar to a powerful pen.

Circle Cutter/Straight Edge Guide

If you want to cut circular holes this great little attachment is an easy way to do this. Whether it be in centimeters or inches this attaches to the Dremel 4000 and cuts holes from 3.4” up to 12”.

Sanding/Grinding Guide

The sand grinding guide stabilizes the Dremel 4000 and helps improve accuracy so that you can work at angles of 45 and 90 degrees. It can also be used as a work platform when it is mounted in a locked position.

Multipurpose Cutting Guide Attachment

The cutting kit makes it easy to make strong controlled cuts in many different materials.

Lawn Mower and Garden Tool Sharpening Attachment

If you want to sharpen your lawn mower blades, shears or hoes, this little attachment is ideal and makes short work of this task.

What Others Are Saying

This Dremel multi tool has received enthusiastic reviews from many online consumers (Amazon and Dremel Website) with 227 out of 240 customers rating it of 4 and 5 stars.

Here are some of the comments to date:

“I was very excited for the release of the Dremel 4000 and bought it the day it hit the shelf.”

“I was originally going to buy a rotary tool and all of the accessories separate. Saved me around $75 compared to buying everything separate.”

“The Dremel 4000 I purchased as part of the 6-50 kit has proven to be an excellent addition to my collection of tools”

“I have owned a Dremel 4000 for several months now. I love it.”

Any complaints?

A few people have said that the Dremel 4000 is too big and/or too heavy for smaller jobs, but a simple way around this is to get the 6/50 model where you get the Flex Shaft attachment. Alternatively opt for the Dremel 300.

Some people also had problems with breaking the threads on the flex shaft attachment connectors by over tightening them. They are made of plastic so they do not need to be over tightened.
